5 Key Dog Training Tips

February 1, 2023

Does your dog know simple commands? If not, you’ll want to take time to work with him. Our canine companions are remarkably loyal and devoted, and are known for being eager to please. However, Fido does need training to learn how to be a good boy. A New Albany, IN vet offers some helpful tips on ‘petucating’ your furry friend below.

Furriculum

Fido can learn over 100 different commands. While you may be excited to teach your super-smart pup how to fetch you a drink or turn lights on, you’ll need to start with the basics. The most important commands for any pooch to know are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Many trainers also recommend teaching Down and Leave It. Work on one at a time. (You may find Sit the easiest to start with, as most dogs pick it up quickly.)

Be Consistent

Consistency is one of the key pillars of good dog training, and it applies to several things. Try to keep Fido on the same schedule for his classes. Work with him daily, and, if possible, at the same time each day. Be sure to use the same phrases every time. Fido won’t understand that ‘Lay Down’ means the same thing as ‘Fido, Go Lay Down’ and may get confused by the nuances.

Reward

It’s very important for Fido to have a positive impression of training. You want him to enjoy learning things! Heap loads of praise and attention on your canine pal when he gets something right. Treats, of course, are also part of the picture. Use small portions, so you don’t accidentally overfeed your fuzzy student.

Don’t Overdo It

Fido doesn’t have a very long attention span, except when it comes to watching you cook bacon or cheeseburgers. Long classes will probably bore your pup, which isn’t going to help anything. About 10 to 15 minutes a day is plenty.

Never Stop

There’s no need to quit training once your furry pal has mastered the basics. Move on to more complicated commands, or work on some fun tricks. This can help build your cute pet’s confidence. It’s also wonderful for bonding. Finally, it’s just a fun way to spend time with your canine friend. Time spent with dogs is never wasted!
