Adopting A Stray Cat

May 15, 2023

Are you considering adopting a stray? Many of our patients are former strays. Some were rescued from the streets, while others just showed up on someone’s porch one day, scared and hungry. There’s no reason you can’t give Fluffy a forever home, especially if she’s won your heart. However, there are a few do’s and don’ts here. A local New Albany, IN vet offers some advice on adopting a stray cat below.

Take Fluffy To The Vet

You’ll need to quarantine your kitty until your vet gives the all-clear. Schedule an appointment right away. Even if your feline friend appears in decent shape, she’ll need a full exam. She’ll also need to be dewormed and brought current on vaccinations and parasite control. Spay/neuter surgery may also be in order. While you’re there, have your vet check for a microchip. If one is found, try to contact the owner. There may be someone out there really heartbroken and missing Fluffy!

Keep Her Isolated

It will take your feline pal some time to settle in. Give her a quiet, comfy space of her own, where she can relax and settle in. A utility room or spare bedroom or bathroom is a good spot. Provide Fluffy with all the kitty luxuries she needs, such as toys, bedding, food, water, and a litterbox and litter. Add a few empty boxes: cats just can’t resist boxes!

Don’t Force Attention

Strays vary widely as far as socialization and friendliness. Some are former pets, who will immediately demand petting and attention. Others may be much more wary and nervous, especially at first. If your new buddy falls into the latter category, you’ll need to give her time to adjust to her new surroundings. Don’t force attention on the furball: you’ll need to gain her trust. Just talking to her will help. You can also try holding out a treat and calling her with that kissing sound.

Purr Activation

We always recommend keeping kitties inside, simply because it’s so much safer for them. This goes double for former strays! Fluffy will need lots of toys and playtime, though, so she doesn’t get bored. Consider making your feline buddy a catio. With time, love, and TLC, you’ll have that little motor going before you know it!
