Fun Ways To Keep Fido Cool

July 15, 2022
Does your dog like summer? Or is he more comfortable in snow and cold? Regardless of your canine pal’s opinion on the weather, you’ll need to be careful to keep him cool over the next few months. Overheating is a huge hazard for dogs in summertime! Of course, helping Fido beat the heat can be both cute and entertaining. Here, a New Albany, IN vet lists some fun ways to help Fido stay cool.

Fountains

There are actually a few different types of fountains you can get Fido. Some are drinking fountains that just keep the water circulating. You can also get ones that splash water into the air when your furry friend steps onto a pad. (We probably don’t have to tell you how cute this is to watch.)

Ice Cream

Ice cream is a summer favorite with both people and pups. You don’t want to give Fido your ice cream, though: it’s got too much fat and sugar for him, and may contain things that just aren’t safe for him, such as chocolate. You can find doggy ice cream in many pet stores, or you can make your own. Just stick with pet-safe ingredients. Some good options are peanut butter, ripe bananas, sodium-free broth, and plain fat-free yogurt. Ask your vet for more information.

Cooling Products

Some pups really struggle with the heat. Huskies, for instance, are much happier when it’s cold out. If your pooch doesn’t do well with high temperatures, consider getting him a cooling vest. You can also get a cooling pad for him to lay on. Want to go the DIY route? Freeze a towel to put on your furry friend’s doggy bed, or hang a wet bandana around his neck.

Splashing Pools

If Fido enjoys swimming, and you have a safe place to take him, then by all means indulge him. Otherwise, consider getting him a kiddie pool to splash around in.

Schedule Change

As the dog days of summer approach, you may want to adjust your canine buddy’s schedule a bit. Walk and play with him in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out. Taking a long slow walk with Fido as the sun goes down is a great way to relax on a summer evening! Do you have questions about your dog’s health or care?
