Hiking In Fall With Fido

November 15, 2022
November 17th is Take A Hike Day! We’re pretty sure that many of our canine patients would be delighted to celebrate this one! Fido loves exploring new trails with his humans. However, you will need to take some precautions to keep your furry buddy safe on your adventures. A New Albany, IN vet offers some tips on this below.

Basics

Fido should be current on all recommended vaccines and parasite control. He should also be microchipped and wearing ID tags. If your furry pal is prone to running off, consider getting him a collar with GPS tracking.

Be Wary Of Wildlife

Wild animals are always a concern, but you’ll need to be extra cautious in fall. Many animals are preparing to hibernate, and may be grumpier and/or more aggressive than usual. You also don’t want Fido having a run-in with a skunk or porcupine. Keep him on a leash, especially if he is prone to charging off after squirrels. You may also want to bring some form of protection, such as a spray, along with you.

Seasonal Flora

Animals aren’t the only danger to be concerned about. Many types of foliage, such as mushrooms and chrysanthemums, that grow through fall are toxic to pets. Don’t let your pup snack on the trail!

Lepto

Leptospirosis is another concern. Fall tends to be a peak time for this dangerous disease. Wet areas and/or conditions increase the risk. Lepto is spread through the urine of infected wild animals, so any place that is frequented by deer, raccoons, and other wild animals is a potential hotspot. There is a vaccine available, though it may not be recommended for all dogs. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Hunting Season

Headed out to the woods? Put an orange vest or bandana on your canine buddy, and wear one yourself as well. You may also want to double check when local seasons start and stop.

Water

This is another piece of year-round advice. Try not to let your furry best buddy drink from rivers and streams, ponds, and especially puddles. The water could be contaminated, and may end up making Fido sick. Bring plenty of water along. You may also want to bring a filter or purification tablets, just as a precaution.
