Keeping Fluffy Out Of The Tree

December 15, 2022

Do you have a cat? If so, you may have a bit of a challenge putting your Christmas tree up, and even more of a challenge keeping it standing. Wreaking havoc on trees is Fluffy’s favorite holiday tradition! A New Albany, IN vet offers some tips on keeping your centerpiece standing below.

Decorate Carefully

Don’t be surprised if Fluffy hones in on the tree as soon as you put it up. As far as she is concerned, you just offered her her very own jungle gym, which is also hung with shiny toys. Distract her by offering her actual toys.

Block It Off

The easier it is for Fluffy to reach the tree, the more likely it is that she’ll knock it down. If possible, put the tree in a corner, away from things like desks or sofas, that make convenient kitty launch pads.

Break Bad Habits

Cats usually train their humans, rather than it being the other way around. However, you may be able to teach Fluffy to think twice before attacking the tree. When your feline buddy approaches the tree, do something that will annoy and/or startle her. Clap your hands, stamp your foot, or make a loud noise.

Take Time To Play

Fluffy may spend most of her time sleeping, but she does have her moments of zoominess. Tire your furry little buddy out with daily play sessions. The idea is for Fluffy to burn off that kitty energy, so that she’s more interested in napping under the tree than trying to climb it.

Get A Fake Tree

This won’t just help you keep Fluffy from climbing the tree: it will also save you some money in the long run. Plus, you can get a silver, red, white, blue, or even black tree! Another bonus? You won’t need to worry about your furry pal drinking the tree’s water, which could be tainted by chemicals.

Secure It

While our frisky feline friends may play by their own rules as far as gravity is concerned, trees definitely do not. A good base is a definite must! You may also want to use clear fishing line to secure the treetop to the wall or ceiling for invisible added support.

Happy Holidays! We hope that all of you have a wonderful holiday season. Please contact us,  your local New Albany, IN animal clinic, anytime!
