Doghouse Do’s And Don’ts

July 1, 2023

It’s Dog House Repair Month! This is also a great time to ‘pupgrade’ your yard and get your canine pal a little place of his own to look adorable in. While choosing a doghouse isn’t the most critical decision you’ll make over the course of your life, there are some things to keep in mind, both when you are purchasing one and setting it up. A New Albany, IN vet offers some tips on this below.

Size It Right

Picking the right size for Fido’s doghouse is very important. If it’s too small, he won’t be comfortable. If it’s too big, it won’t feel as safe or cozy. If you have a puppy, go by your canine companion’s expected adult weight.

Pick Insulating Material

Plastic is cheapest, but it isn’t going to do much by way of insulation. Wood is a better bet. However, don’t use pressure-treated wood: the chemicals used to make it are toxic to Man’s Best Friend. You may also want to add insulation to the roof yourself.

Raise It Up

You’ll want to lift Fido’s doghouse off the floor a bit, to help keep out rain and snow. Don’t leave open gaps beneath it, though: that could attract snakes or other critters. Use sand or gravel to fill in empty holes.

Location

Put the doghouse in a spot that will get sun in winter, but shade in summer. Under a deciduous tree is a good bet. You’ll also want to pay attention to wind patterns. In winter, you want the door to face away from prevailing winds. In summer, Fido may enjoy a cool breeze. You may want to rotate it seasonally.

Inspect It

If Fido already has a doghouse, this is the perfect time to take a close look at it. Make sure that the roof is in good shape and doesn’t leak. Check for sharp edges, such as splinters or nails, as well. A good cleaning is also in order!

Personalize It

There’s no reason you can’t have some fun decorating your canine buddy’s outdoor hangout. Add a cute sign or flowerbox, or give Fido his own deck or kiddie pool. Just don’t leave your furry pal outdoors too long. Dogs should live indoors, with the rest of the family!
