Cat Care For Apartment Dwellers

July 15, 2023

Do you live in an apartment? If so, you’re in good company. Nearly 40 million Americans live in apartments or condos, and quite a few of them have pets. Cats are the most popular choice of pet for apartment dwellers, and it isn’t hard to see why. They’re small, quiet, and generally won’t make much of a mess. Fluffy also doesn’t need to be walked, and she can do just fine in small spaces. A New Albany, IN offers some care tips for kitties in apartments below.

Windows

Our feline pals may have very different opinions on many things, but most of them love a good window seat. Set up a comfy spot for your kitty, where she can relax and watch what’s happening outside. Just make sure your screens and windows close securely. If your place has blinds, you may want to put them up and get a different window treatment. Fluffy has a habit of making herself a little ‘door’ in blinds. This can be dangerous, as there’s a chance she could get caught. (This could also cost you part of your security deposit.)

Litterboxes

One issue people in smaller faces may face? Where to put the litterbox. If you have a spare bathroom or a broom closet, that may be your best bet. Otherwise, you can look into getting something that will conceal it. There are furniture pieces made specifically for this. If you’re a creative type, you can also make your own by upcycling an old trunk or end table. Another option is to get a folding screen.

Veterinary Care

Indoor cats tend to be healthier than kitties who are allowed to roam, simply because they aren’t as exposed to things like parasites and disease. However, Fluffy will still need regular veterinary care. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Wall Space

Fluffy is an easy keeper, but she will appreciate having a few things of her own, such as a cat tower. Short on floor space? You can still make your home fun for Fluffy. Look for ‘purrniture’ that utilizes wall space. Cat shelves, of course, are a huge hit with apartment kitties. You can also get a hanging scratching post for your feline buddy to use as a nail care station.
