Keeping Your Reptile’s Tank Humid

June 14, 2022
Reptiles are very fascinating creatures, and they can be captivating to watch. While they aren’t going to appeal to everyone, they do have many fans. Of course, reptiles do have some very specific care needs, especially regarding their climate and environment. Here, a Louisville, KY vet offers some tips on keeping your pet’s tank humidity levels right.

Set The Habitat Up Properly

A proper tank setup is an absolute must. You’ll need to get your pet a home that is the proper shape, size, and material. Airflow is also important. Without ventilation, your reptile’s habitat may develop mold and mildew. One option is to get a tank with a mesh cover. Get something you can put over the mesh: you can adjust its position as needed.

Foggers and humidifiers can also be very helpful. Stick with ones made specifically for reptile habitats, though, as these will be much safer.

Did you know that a good sprayer can get the humidity levels all the way up to 100 percent? It won’t stay that humid for long: levels will drop quickly as soon as you stop spraying. However, if your reptilian buddy needs to be sprayed several times a day, it may be worth your while to invest in a good automated sprayer.

This may be the simplest option. Get a mister, and use it a few times a day. Battery operated ones literally make this as easy as pushing a button. You may need to mist more often when it’s very hot or dry. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Water Bowl

Keeping those humidity levels up doesn’t need to be a high-tech endeavor. Even putting a large, shallow bowl of water in your pet’s habitat can help, as the evaporation will increase the humidity. Just make sure the water is clean and shallow, and that the bowl or pool is angled in a way that will allow your reptilian pal to get in and out easily.

Choose The Right Substrate

While substrate won’t actually increase humidity, it can maintain it. Therefore, picking the right substrate can also go a long way towards keeping humidity levels where they need to be. Some good options would be natural wood, branches, soil, live plants, moss, and cork. Ask your vet for specific recommendations. As your Louisville, KY animal clinic, we’re here to help.
